Mother’s Day is great. Know what is even greater? The 19th Annual Old Escondido Historic District Mothers Day Home Tour.
Five historic homes, each representing a different decade in Escondido history, will be open to the public tour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 8.
Escondido was incorporated on Oct. 8, 1888. Only a decade later, Beach House became the crown jewel of the Historical District ruling from the southeast corner of Juniper and Broadway.
Beach House “was exceptionally restored by the current owners; the interior boasts exquisite wallpapers and elegant fabrics,” Carol Rea said. “Nearby on 6th Avenue, the Blackburn house was built in 1904 and moved to its current location from 2nd Avenue in 1934.”
The Perry House, on 5th Avenue, was built in 1924 for Martin Perry and his wife. Perry was a teacher, then a principal, and, finally, the first high school district superintendent. The Mayne House, on 9th Ave. was completed in 1940 for John and Naomi Mayne.
The “newest” home, according to Rea, is on Kalmia Street. Allen McManus built it for his son and daughter-in-law, Lester and Bettie McManus in 1953. Bettie was a department store model. Her spacious closets reflect her love of fashion. Current owners have an impressive collection of retro-home appliances and décor displayed throughout the mid-century ranch-style home.
Refreshments will be served at the lovely Beach House garden, Rea said. Elegant linens and floral arrangements will be on hand to make the day especially memorable for mothers ands fellow travelers.

Home-baked cookies and professionally baked items will be offered along with a choice of refreshing beverages. A beautiful full-color keepsake program with photographs and descriptions of the homes is also included in the ticket price, according to Rea.
Home Tour tickets can be purchased in advance for $25 each at Rosemary-Duff Florist, 101 W. 2nd at Broadway or at Major Market on Centre City Parkway. Tickets also are available on-line at www.oldescondido.org.
Children under age 12 can attend free with a paying adult. On the day of the tour only, tickets will be available for $30 each at 537 S. Juniper St. although tickets are anticipated to sell out before the event this year, according to Rea.
Proceeds from the annual Historic Home Tour further the mission of the Old Escondido Historic District; to preserve, protect, and promote Escondido’s oldest neighborhood. For more information, call 760-291-7206 or visit www.oldescondido.org.
