Tomato talk scheduled for April 12 Garden Club Meeting
Roy Wilburn, horticulture director for Sunshine Care Homes in Poway, will “talk tomato” at the Dos Valles Garden Club’s Tuesday, April 12 meeting. It will be held 10 a.m. at the St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church, 31020 Cole Grade Road. It’s free and open to all who would attend.
Wilburn will address vegetable production, focusing on growing tomatoes. He will discuss the work he does with the elderly residents of Sunshine Care.
Wilburn manages five organic gardens, greenhouses, fruit tree orchards, a Memorial Rose Garden and landscaping for the 32-acre Sunshine Care assisted living community. He directs the Sunshine Care Garden Club’s “Seed to Table” program to teach children gardening. presents Sunshine Care’s Free Garden Lecture Series at 10:30 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month.
Vintage VC movie to be shown Sunday
Motion picture scenes of Valley Center filmed more than 60 years ago will be screened for the first time in six decades on Sunday, April 17, at the annual meeting of the Friends of the Valley Center Library.
The program, to be held in the library’s Community Room, is the first in a series of events celebrating the Centennial of the Library which opened in 1916.
The event, open to the public starting at 2 p.m., will include a brief business meeting after which the film, “Highway to the Stars”, will be shown. The title refers to the street now known as Valley Center Road, a name that was not officially adopted until the early 1960s.
The film, in color, was shot in 1952 by the first president of the newly-organized Chamber of Commerce. It is a silent film, but will be accompanied with music performed by Mike Klingbiel at the piano. Commentary will be provided by Robert Lerner of the Valley Center Historical Society.

Dos Valles Garden Club 2016 Flower & Horticulture Show
Spring has sprung at the Valley Center Library. The flower show is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 22 and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23. Admission? Free.
“Recycle, Respect, Restore the Earth” is the show’s theme. It features local plants, floral designs, flower and fruit exhibits, a working hydroponics exhibit, youth exhibits from local schools and a photo display from Garden Club members.
“Attend the event and you can’t help but get inspired by beautiful arrangements, examples of all the things we can grow in Valley Center,” DVGC publicity chairwoman Sue Reynolds said, “as well as how this show involves the local youth. The show connects community with the natural beauty that surrounds us.”

Christine Schick wins Woodsy Owl Poster Contest
Christine Schick won first place among third graders, statewide in the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster contest. The contest, sponsored by California Garden Clubs and the local Dos Valles Garden Club. Christine is a third grader at Valley Center Elementary School. Ninety local posters were submitted fir approval
“It made me happy,” Christine said. “I thought of doing a cartoon owl and it worked.” She included the owl’s slogan, “Lend a Hand—Care for the Land” on her poster.
The young award winner will be honored at the California Garden Club’s 85th annual convention, to be held in Irvine this May.
The Dos Valles Garden Club has sponsored the poster contest in the Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District for five years. The club also sponsors an environmental essay and poetry contest for first through fifth graders.
Christine’s poster and the 15 finalist posters for all the contests will be displayed at the upcoming Dos Valles Garden Club Flower and Horticulture Show, April 22 and April 23 at the Valley Center Library. Admission is free.
