A group of North County cancer survivors and caregivers took their battle against the disease to new heights last week by trying to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest cupcake tower; their sweet success — a 31.5 foot tower made out of 25,103 cupcakes – have crushed the previous record of 21 feet and 7,500 cupcakes, according to the World Record Academy.
Thousands of spectators came to see the cupcake tower and join in festivities, which continued into the evening. Cupcakes sold at a dozen for a dollar and raised about $2,000 for the American Cancer Society.
The project was run by Team Beep Beep, a participant in the Relay for Life of Escondido, which supports the American Cancer Society and brings together community members to encourage cancer survivors and honor those who have fought cancer.
Dozens of bakers made the cupcakes in the 24 hours leading up to Saturday’s event, held outside Oak Hill Drive Church of Christ in Escondido. Fifteen official counters were on hand at 7 a.m. to start tallying the tasty treats.
Batches of 850 cupcakes were laid out on tables with three counters verifying the numbers at each table, said Deborah Anderson, one of the official counters.
To get the record, at least for now, 96 cupcakes rotated into and out of the oven every 20 minutes for two days. How long the record will last, though, is anybody’s guess.
Just a month before, on April 29, the Wafi Mall in Dubai became the most recent Guinness World Record holder for the tallest cupcake tower, which stood at 8 meters, or just over 26-feet, and contained about 8,000 cupcakes.
The Guinness World Records world record for the largest cupcake mosaic measures 138.56 m² (1,491.44 ft²) and was made by THE SPAR GROUP (PTY) LTD (South Africa), in Durban, South Africa, on 5 September 2015.
Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest cupcake; it weighs 1,176.6 kg (2,594 lb) and was achieved by Georgetown Cupcake (USA) at Georgetown Cupcake’s national shipping headquarters in Sterling, Virginia, USA, on 2 November 2011.
