It was a scene to behold at Palomar’s Wallace Memorial Pool last month as schools from around San Diego and beyond came together to ring in the new season with the annual two-day Waterman Festival.

The festival gives swimmers a chance to compete in all events in order to prepare for the new season.

“It’s like a fun meet so everyone on all teams competes in all the events,” said Palomar sophomore, Lucy Gates. “I’m very excited to improve my times.”

Coach Jem McAdams, Palomar’s swim and dive coach, said he was confident about his team. “When they train hard, do what they’re supposed to do, they’re gonna be able to accomplish some of the goals they set throughout the course of the season.”

Palomar’s swimmers did just that on the first day of the meet. They had a solid combined effort with at least one first-place finisher in every event, which included the 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter backstroke, 50-meter breaststroke, 50-meter freestyle, and the 100-meter individual medley.

For the woman’s side, Morgan Hage placed first in the 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter backstroke, and 100-meter individual medley, with times of 31.63, 33.12, and 1:11:05, respectively. Lucy Gates finished first in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 35.62.
